History

SUT Group of Hospitals

Sree Uthradom Thirunal Hospital was inaugurated by Mr. E. K. Nayanar, the then Chief Minister of Kerala, in 1987, at a time when tertiary care facilities were extremely inadequate in this part of the country. The main aim of the hospital was to establish such advanced medical and surgical facilities one by one. The hospital was started with full facilities for Interventional Cardiology and Open Heart Surgery. The first coronary artery bypass surgery on beating heart in Kerala was done here. The first Mitral valvuloplasty was done here as well in 1988, just 3 years after its introduction.

The hospital emerged as a center of excellence in a short time, while continuing to grow steadily by establishing other specialities, giving special emphasis to facilities not readily available in this part of the world. One of the largest and busiest Artificial Kidney Unit, first Ophthalmology Department in the state to start Intraocular Lens, Phaco etc. as day cases, Orthopedic Department providing world class results in advanced procedures such as Limb Salvage and Knee replacement, Neuro Surgery Department with excellent track record in Neuro Trauma, first advanced Neonatology Department in Trivandrum, second Advanced Interventional Radiology Unit in Kerala etc. are only a fewof the achievements of the Group. Excellent personnel consisting of experienced Physicians, Surgeons with world class expertise, skilled nurses and technicians are the main strengths of the Group. SUT Group started its second hospital, SUT Mother & Baby Hospital, at Pattom in 2001. It is devoted to high standards of care in Obstetrics, Gynecology and Neonatology.

Further-more, a new SUT Royal Hospital has been started near Ulloor in 2010.

Apart from the establishment of advanced treatment facilities, compassion for poor patients, commitment to the community to improve the standards of health and medical care are the pre-occupations of the Group, from the beginning. SUT Group, under Dr.K.N.Pai Heart Foundation had established a SUT Rural General Hospital at Vattappara, Nedumangad Municipality, to provide good quality medical care at affordable costs. This hospital became the natural choice for the establishment of the new medical college, which is now being expanded to make it an excellent center for the learning and practice of medicine. Currently, the hospital and campus is run by Sri. Kanchi Kamakoti Peetom Charitable Trust.

The College Campus is encompassed within a picturesque land with a number of hillocks surrounded by evergreen coconut groves, plantains and rubber plantations. The College, is linked with the different sections of the city by bus routes, is very near the state highway:MC Road and the nearest railway station is fewer than 15 kilometers from the college.

The first batch of students was admitted in October 2006. The annual admission is 100 students. The Campus contains separate hostels for both men and women, each complete with a study room, entertainment and indoor games room and an in-house gymnasium.
